Saving on Auto Insurance How to Save Money on Car Insurance

By Matt Katz

If you want cheaper car insurance, there are a lot of ways you can lower the premium

The best thing you can do for yourself, in terms of saving money on car insurance, is by shopping around. The more insurers you ask for a quotation, the better chance that you'll stumble upon a company with a really good rate.

If you are still in search of a car to buy, be it new or used, find out what premiums it will have after you purchase it. Your premiums will be lower if the auto you purchase isn't too expensive, has a good amount of safety features, and has decent crash test score.

One of the most popular ways to save money on car insurance is by increasing your deductible. Your deductible is how much money you pay out of your own pocket to fix your car before the insurer pays for the rest of the damages. You just don't want to open yourself to too much risk.

Try to buy a policy that is longer. Buying a policy that is 1 year long will save you money over the policy that is 6 months. It is very similar to buying something wholesale.

If you have an old auto, you may not need the collision or comprehensive coverage that you have on it. Whats the point on insuring something with little value?

Don't just rely on internet sources (such as comparison sites), when shopping for auto insurance. You should always try to speak at least over the phone, if not face-to-face. Why? The more the insurer knows about you, the more discounts you can get.

You may get a discount if you insure your auto with the same company you get homeowners or renters coverage from. You should still explore options from other auto insurers as the house/car insurance discount may be miniscule compared to the other alternatives.

Drive slow and safe. Your auto insurance premium will go up with every accident and/or traffic violation that you get.
